Causes of Dry Eye

The doctors at Hamilton Vision Center use the latest technology for diagnosis and treatment.
Our in office treatments focus on Ocular Surface Disease (OSD) which is caused when one or all of the components of the tear film are not in balance. Clogged oil glands along both upper and lower lid margins contribute to 85% of Ocular Surface Disease.

Some of the main causes of Ocular Surface Disease are age, hormonal imbalance, medications, medical conditions, environmental conditions, contact lenses, refractive surgeries and micro-organisms that live on our skin such as Demodex mites and staph bacteria.

How is dry eye treated?

Dry Eye Fact

Did you know that 85% of patients with dry eye have meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) which is progressive if not treated.

Healthy Meibomian Glands

Healthy Meibomian glands secrete oils into the tear film which prevents tear evaporation. There should be row of long white glands on each eye lid.

Meibomian Gland Atrophy

When meibomian glands get blocked with hardened oil, they will begin to atrophy (die). If we don’t clear the blockage, the atrophy can become severe.
